Telangana Committed to set up 10 Medical Colleges: Health Minister

Hyderabad, October 31, 2017: The State government is committed to establishing one government medical college in each of the 10 erstwhile districts in the State, and as part of this commitment, the Chief Minister had recently announced two new medical colleges for Nalgonda and Suryapet districts.
Making this assurance at the Legislative Council here on Monday, Minister for Health and Family Welfare Dr C Laxma Reddy said that at present, six medical colleges are being run under the government and permission is awaited for Medak medical college.
The Minister, who was replying to members’ queries, said that after the formation of the new State, the government was successful in getting additional seats in the medical stream at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in both government and private colleges.
After the acquisition of land in Nalgonda and Suryapet districts, the proposals for setting up medical colleges would be sent to the Medical Council of India and the Central government for permission. “Each medical college will have 150 seats with 300-bed hospital attached to it,” the Minister said.
Reddy said the government was also committed to develop ‘Ayush’ (homeopathy) services through allocation of adequate funds. “We are integrating allopathy and homeopathy services, and are accordingly advising patients to make best use of the services,” he said.
As part of strengthening Ayush services, the department was developing Balkampet Nature Cure hospital, Reddy said, adding that the government was also considering increasing the number of wellness centres in the State.
Council member Palla Rajeswhar Reddy said as part of strengthening the medical system in the country, the planning department has recommended establishment of 187 Medical colleges in the country. Members Karne Prabhakar and Dr. Bhupathi Reddy also spoke on the subject.
