Multi – Dimensional Treatment for Diabetes

DIABETES / HONEY-SHOWER / MADHU-MEHA
Diabetes is a chronic degenerative disease. It is not a new disease. Ancient physicians like CHARAKA (600 BC) have described the details of diabetes.
DIABETES is derived from two Greek words “DIA” means “through” and “BETES” means “to pass”. It is caused by the disturbance of the metabolism of the whole body and its hormonal imbalance and most important
cause STRESS.

Diabetes occurs in two forms – 1. DIABETES MELLITUS and 2. DIABETES INSIPIDUS .

DIABETES INSIPIDUS
It is a form of diabetes resulting from a deficiency of vasopressin ( the pituitary hormone that regulates the kidneys); characterized by the chronic excretion of large amount of pale urine which results in dehydration & extreme thirst.
DIABETES MELLITUS
It is the commonly known diabetes. It is of two types. TYPE-1 , INSULIN DEPENDENT DIABETES MELLITUS (IDDM) and TYPE-2 , NON INSULIN DEPENDENT DIABETES MELLITUS (NIDDM).
TYPE-1 Diabetes mellitus has insulin production less than minimum physiological requirement . This condition is known as ABSOLUTE deficiency (it is not zero). It can be treated only if insulin is supplied from outside. That’s why this type of Diabetes is called as IDDM which commonly occur in young age group. That’s why it is also called as JUVENILE DIABETES.
TYPE-2 Diabetes mellitus: In this condition, body produces insulin but it’s full physiological action does not occur. This is called as RELATIVE deficiency – IT MAY BE POSSIBLE TO TREAT WITHOUT SUPPLYING INSULIN FROM OUTSIDE ) that’s why it is called NIDDM, also called as Insulin Resistance.  Body tries to produce extra amount of insulin, so pancreas have to work extra. On a long term basis, it may not be possible to produce huge extra amount of insulin . NIDDM basically occurs in higher age group that’s why it is called as MATURITY ONSET DIABETES .
3.OTHER causes of DIABETES
(a) MODY (maturity onset diabetes of young ) – genetic defect of b-cell .
(b) genetic defect of insulin
(c) pancreatic disease like – chronic pancreatitis
(d) endocrine – antagonist
(e) certain drugs / chemicals
(f) virus infection
(g) some immunological disorder
(h) certain genetic syndrome
4.GESTATIONAL DIABETES
CRITERIA FOR DIABETES MELLITUS
1.Fasting (8 hrs) – Less than 110 = normal
Less than 126 = IFG ( impaired fasting glucose)
If 126 or more = DIABETES MELLITUS
2.Post prandrial (2 hrs ) – Less than 140 = normal
Less than 200 = IGT (impaired glucose tolerance)
If 200 or more = DIABETES MELLITUS
3.Random (venous blood / plasma blood )
INVESTIGATION FOR DIABETES MELLITUS

  • Standard glucose estimation – Venous blood / Capillary blood
Glycosylated heamoglobin / glycated heamoglobin ; value depends on glucose level in past 6 – 10 week.
  • Blood sugar level – normal value is upto 6 % or 7 % , it may not be more than 9 % because it produces long term diabetes complaints. If it is more than 10 % than it will be uncontrolled .

Diabetic urine examination – ‘Qualitative reagent test’ — GLYCOSURIA
This method called semi-quantitative method. (morning sample have more sugar whereas afternoon & evening sample have less sugar ). Blood level higher than renal threshold is ALIMENTARY GLYCOSURIA, if blood level
lower than renal threshold is RENAL GLYCOSURIA .
TREATMENT: by lifestyle modification .
1. DIETARY GUIDELINES
According to J.H.Kellogg ( THE NEW DIETETICS ), an excess of protein produces worse effects than an excess of carbohydrates by increasing acidosis as well as the loss of sugar since sugar may be derived from protein as well as from carbohydrates. So, a diabetic meal should consist of high fibre, low fat and protein and complex carbohydrates. Fruit and vegetables are rich in minerals, vitamins and antioxidants and therefore should be consumed . Salads can be freely taken by diabetics, but with limit use of oil .
Total proteins : 15% – 20% of calories required .
Fat : less than 30% of calories required .
Carbohydrates : 55% – 60% of calories required .
Fibre : 25 gms per day for women , 40 gms per day for men (approx) .
A complex high-fibre carbohydrate diet is recommended for diabetics . Complex carbohydrates are slowly absorbed, thereby keeping blood sugar levels fairly stable. Examples are millets, brown rice, beans, oats, vegetables and fruits.
“Meat has a toxic action which paralyzes the function of the pancreases”, and in this way exercises an injurious effect in diabetes. Practically all authorities on diabetes now agree that vegetarian source of protein is much preferred to meat or animal protein in the treatment of this condition. vegetable proteins are entirely sufficient to maintain health and strength , and is now conceded by the physiologists . It is better to have fixed & smaller meals with timings.
SPECIFIC DIETS FOR DIABETES : To prevent and manage diabetes, food containing insulin (e.g.- sprouted grains) or an insulin – like active principle (e.g.- bitter gourd) should be eaten; to compensate or supply the deficiency by eating foods that stimulate the production of insulin (e.g.- French beans). Cut down the body’s requirement of insulin by reducing the consumption of carbohydrates, especially starches and sugars. These provides sufficient supply of vitamins (especially Vit-C & Vit-D) and minerals, which are essential for the pancreas; and ensure a high fibre diet; the soluble fibre in fruit, barely and soya beans is very helpful to control blood sugar levels. Fenugreek seeds (methi dana), soak a teaspoon of methi seeds in water overnight, sallow them in the morning with water, this is supportive in controlling diabetes. Black jamun, fruit or jamun powder, jamboline in the jamun helps control blood sugar levels . Low fat curd, butter milk, stimulates pancreas to produce insulin and helps control blood sugar . Lettuce, tomato and turnip are very low in carbohydrates and provide plenty of minerals. Tomato also helps in controlling the sugar levels in the blood. Carrot contains a hormone known as tachykinin, which is an insulin – like compound, so it is very good for diabetes, so are French beans and string beans. Their juice stimulates the production of insulin. Other vegetables like cucumber, spinach, cabbage, curry leaves and almonds are all very useful for diabetes.  Raw Banana, cooked as a vegetable, is also very good.
2. YOGA THERAPY
Yoga is a perfectly practical system of self culture. One attains harmonious development of the body, mind, intellect and soul by practicing yoga.  This should be practiced under trained person or yogis . Followings are the general guidelines ( as mentioned by yogi Paramhansa Swami Satyananda Saraswati).
1st week :
1.pawanmuktashana part 1 & 2 ; vajrashana
2.pranayama – naari shodhana kriya ; phase-1 & bhramri
3.shatkriya – neti & kunjala
4.shithilikarana / relaxation in lie down position
2nd week :
1.ashana – as above mentioned & perform all mula-bandha ashana
2.pranayama – naari shodhana kriya ; phase- 2 & bhastrika 3 round
3.shatkriya – neti & kunjala
4.relaxation – yoga nindra
5.meditation – ajapa japa ; phase – 1st

6.meditation – ajapa japa ; phase – 3rd
3. NATUROPATHY
HOT & COLD COMPRESS TO THE ABDOMEN – repeat it four to six times after the interval of three minutes each. Hot – cold compress speeds up blood supply and oxygen to the liver and pancreas and these organs become active; and after a few days of application their functioning is regulated and improved. Secretion of hormones and digestive
juices also improves; and carbohydrate metabolism improves, which in turn has therapeutic effect on diabetes.
MUD PACKS TO ABDOMEN – the cold effect of the mud pack works like nutrients to the liver and pancreas, and they become strong and active.
STEAM BATH – especially beneficial in metabolic diseases like obesity, diabetes etc . elimination of toxins through sweating reduces burden on the vital organs like kidneys, lungs and liver.
MASSAGE – it improves the digestive system and the metabolic process. Massage is beneficial for liver and heart. It enhances the process of oxygenation.
4. HOMEOPATHY
HOLISTIC AS WELL AS INDIVIDUALISTIC APPROACH IN MEDICINE THROUGH HOMEOPATHY – This is a unique concept in homeopathy. Even though it may sound strange, homeopathy does not treat just pathological effect of the disease per se, but the individual as a whole. Master Hahnemann who published his work on Chronic diseases and its cure advised to give more importance to the patients past & family history to understand the genesis of illness and to prescribe constitutional medicine . Some so called specific homeopathic remedies for diabetes:
Uranium nitrate , phloridzin , syzygium jambolinum , gymnema sylvesta , insulin , acid phos , helonias aromata , iodium , sulphur , lycopodium , arsenicum bromatum , rhus aromaticum , phosphorus , bryonia , nux vomica , etc .
