Soon, pharmacopoeia standards for drugs/formulations used under Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani (ASU) and Homoeopathic systems of medicine will be available at a click of mouse. The move, a first-of-its kind is in keeping with the Government’s vision ‘Digital India’ as well as to reach out to local manufacturers to help them produce quality and safe alternate drugs.
To begin with, the website of Ayurveda Pharmacopoeia giving scientific details of over 700 ayurveda drugs will be launched by Union Ayush Minister ShripadNaik on December 13 at a symposium to be organised by the Pharmacopoeia Commission for Indian Medicine and Homeopathy (PCIM&H). “With the launch of the website, these documents will be accessible online as well,” said Dr KRC Reddy, Director of the PCIM&H.
It is an autonomous body under the Ministry with a primary mandate to develop pharmacopoeial standards for drugs/formulations used under ASU and Homoeopathic systems of medicine.“The Pharmacopoeias are official documents and are widely used all over India. These are the compendia of quality standards to ensure the identity, purity and strength of the drug imported, manufactured for sale, stocked or exhibited for sale or distributed in the country.”
He further explained that while demand for the herbal drug is on rise, many manufacturers are still unaware that they have to adhere the standards and quality control parameters as given in the authoritative books, pharmacopoeias and formularies of these medical system.
