Hyderabad: This year 36 postgraduate posts were cancelled in the Government Nizamia Tibbi College for the first time due to lack of infrastructure and adequate faculty. The courses were introduced in 1972.
There will be no PG courses for specialities such as general medicine, gynaecology, paediatrics and others. The Central Ayush ministry has refused to continue the courses due to lack of facilities, which was not rectified by the Ayush state department.
Dr Abul Hasan Ashraf, a member of the Government of the Nizamia Tibbi College and the Hospital Development Society, said that this was the first time since the beginning of the courses that were cancelled.
“There have been several representations before the Ayush ministry and the state department that they should recruit teachers. “The lack of infrastructure has been noticed and persecuted by state government authorities, but no action has been taken,” said Dr Ashraf.
The elimination of university seats is a major blow to Unani’s medical education in the state. The Unani doctors are upset that the Ayush department and the health department treat their representations without seriousness, despite several reminders.
Dr Syed Zain, Unani’s chief physician, said: “To the government, Nizamia College is called the Oxford of Unani education. This is a big blow for the university and for the educational flow of Unani. “
The sanctioned posts have not been filled since the last decade. Doctors who graduated from the university claim that in 2004 the number of seats was reduced, but then the chief minister Y.S. Rajashekar Reddy made sure that the recruitment of personnel was done and the seats were restored.
After the Center’s decision became known, the doctors met with the family’s chief health and wellness secretary, Shanti Kumari, urging her to take immediate steps to restore the seats.
