Abstract
Imponderabilia means which is not weighable, i.e., the substances which have no perceptible weights, they are immate- rial power or energy; they may be natural or artificial. Medicines prepared from energy, available from natural and physical sources are called imponderabilia.( 2,8,9 )
Hahnemann observes in his Organon, aphorism 280, Foot Note that. “even imponderable agencies can produce the most violent medicinal effects upon man”.
Dr. H.W. Allen describes their mode of preparations and symptoms in his “Materia Medica of Nosodes.” Elizabeth Wright mentions six such sources of drugs in his ‘A Brief Study Course in Homoeopathy’. (2,8,9 )
Dr Caspari, Jhar, Clarke, Swan and John Butler etc. have described their symptoms.
Use of Imponderabilia medicines is required as management during one sided presentation of symptoms as well as during acute stage of disease. These lesser known medicines when applied in consideration with available symptoms with rational search for related aspects bring a complete meaning of prescribed medicine. RADIUM BROMATUM along with other lesser known homoeopathic medicines were introduced in homoeopathy with their previous reputation of being effective in situations or conditions listed down. With gradual use some more new symptoms were added in them. The aim of this article is to define the characteristic of RADIUM BROMATUM and help the reader to apply the written information for practical purposes.
Introduction
Common name: Radium Bromide.Ra Br2, 2H2O. Trituration.
Radium Bromatum is from natural energy sources .
An important addition to the Materia Medica, especially since the proving’s by Diffenbach have precisionled its use. Radium bromide of 1,800,000 radio-activity was employed.
Radium is an elemental substance, possessing remarkable chemical and physical properties, discovered in pitchblende, a complex uranium ore, by Professor and Madame Curie. This agent is employed in the relief of malignant growths and non-malignant conditions. Internally it is employed as a radio-active water and in potentized form.(1 )
Found effective in the treatment of rheumatism and gout, in skin affections generally, acne rosacea, nævi, moles, ulcers and cancers. Lowered blood pressure. Severe aching pains all over, with restlessness, better moving about. Chronic rheumatic arthritis. Lateness in appearance of symptoms. Ulcers due to Radium burns take a long time to heal. Marked increase in the polymorphonuclear neutrophils. Great weakness.

Mind

Head
Vertigo, with pain in the back of head, left when in bed. Occipital and vertex pain, accompanying severe lumbar aching. Severe pain over right eye, spreading back to occiput and to vertex, better in open air. Head feels heavy. Frontal headache. (1,3,4,5,6,7 )
Eyes
Both eyes ache. Red, smarting agg. Reading. Sensation as if pieces of cotton in eyes amel. Rubbing.
Ear
Sensation as if Sound of rushing water in the ear . amel. lying on my face.
Nose
Itching and dryness of nasal cavities, better in open air.
Face
Aching pain in the angle of the right lower jaw. Violent trifacial neuralgia. Flushed. Acne rosacea.
Mouth
Dryness of mouth. Metallic taste. Prickling sensation on tip of tongue. Breath seems hot.
Throat
Sore, raw with earache. Feeling in the throat as from eating pepper.
Stomach
Empty feeling in my stomach. Warm sensation in stomach. I Crave pork. Usual food not relished; sour things taste good. Aversion to sweets, ice-cream. Nausea and sinking sensation, belching of gas. Nausea amel. Eating.
Abdomen
Pain, violent cramps, rumbling, full of gas; pain over McBurney’s point, and at location of sigmoid flexure. Much flatulence. Colic amel. Bending double and passing stools. Pruritus ani and piles. Alternating constipation and loose movements. Stools, at noon; soft, dark, or offensive, slate coloured .
Urinary
Increased elimination of solids, particularly of chlorides. Renal irritation, albuminuria, granular and hyaline casts. Nephritis with rheumatic symptoms. Enuresis. Dysuria. then erection. This remedy has relieved glycosuria, and has modified diabetes mellitus. The Urine is extremely acidic and there are severe pains in various Parts of the body. (1,3,4,5,6,7 )
Male
Itching and Eczema of penis and inner surface of thighs.
Female
Pruritus vulvae. Delayed and irregular menstruation and backache. Aching pains in abdomen over pubes when flow comes on. Menses last one day; then bloody leucorrhoea. Right breast sore, relieved by hard rubbing. Uterine hemorrhage, when Ipecac fails. Lochia putrid, scanty or suppressed. Leucorrhoea; white and scanty; curdy and cheesy. (1,3,4,5,6,7 )
Respiratory
Persistent cough with tickling in suprasternal fossa. Dry, spasmodic cough agg. lying; smoking; amel. eating and open air; sitting up; exercise. Throat dry, sore, chest constricted. Tightness of chest; feels as if she could not get enough air. Chest pain alternates with indigestion and a stuffed up feeling. (1,3,4,5,6,7 )
Heart
Blood pressure low. Pulse, rapid, irregular, fluttering. Awakes with palpitation. Constriction at. (1,3,4,5,6,7 )
Neck and Back
Aching in the back of my neck. Weakness between scapulae. Pain and lameness in cervical vertebræ, worse dropping head forward, better standing, or sitting erect. Ascending Lumbar and sacral backache, pain appears to be in bone, continued motion relieves. Backache between shoulders and lumbar-sacral region, better after walking. (1,3,4,5,6,7 )
Extremities
Severe pain in all the limbs, joints, especially in knee and ankles, sharp pains in shoulders, arms, hands and fingers. Legs, arms and neck feel hard and brittle, as though they would break on moving. Arms feel heavy. Cracking my shoulder. Pain in toes, calves, hip-joint, popliteal spaces. Muscles of legs and hips are sore. Arthritis, aching pains, worse at night. Sciatica and neuritis. When of inflammatory character, there are frequently symptoms of gout present. Dermatitis of the fingers. Trophic changes in the fingernails.
Skin
Small pimples. Erythema and dermatitis, with itching, burning, swelling and redness of face and genitals. Necrosis and ulceration. Itching all over the body, burning of skin, as if a fire. Scabby; on ears. Branny scabs. Epithelioma. Dermatitis. Sclero-derma. Psoriasis. Callosities. Cancer.
Sleep
Restless sleep with palpitation. Sleepiness with lethargy. Dreams are vivid, busy. Dreams of fire.
Fever
Cold sensation internally, with chattering of teeth until noon. Internal chilliness followed by heat of the skin, associated with bowel movements and flatulence.
Modalities
- Better, open air, continued motion, hot bath, lying down, pressure.
- Worse, getting up.
Relationship
- Compare: Anacardium (the ulceration produced by it is like Radium. It may appear elsewhere than on place of contact and appear late). Compare: X- Ray; Rhus; Sepia; Uranium; Ars; Pulsat; Caustic.
- Antidotes: Rhus ven; Tellur.
Potency

Conclusion :
Radium bromatum being a lesser known medicine can be prescribed in an effective manner when the symptoms correspond. Since this medicine has a wide variety of action covering major organs it can help stabilize the condition if given in proper dosage and repetition. Applying this remedy in an individual ailment provides the fastest possible recovery. In India some government and non-government organizations are working to know pathogenetic effects of drugs by continuous research. However Imponderabilia remedies when prescribed give excellent results.
