Introduction
Jaundice is a medical condition in which due to increase in the bilirubin level in the blood there is yellowish discoloration of skin, eyes and mucous membrane. Jaundice in itself is not the disease, it is the symptom of several possible illnesses related to liver, blood, bile duct.
Bilirubin is the yellow pigment that is found in the hemoglobin of red blood cells. hemoglobin is the protein which helps to carry oxygen and gives red color to the blood.in jaundice there is increase in the level of bilirubin, due to destruction of red blood cells. Jaundice can develop at any age but most commonly in newborns. About 80% of the babies have jaundice in the first week of their life.
Jaundice is classified as unconjugated, hepatocellular, or cholestatic. The first type is unconjugated or haemolytic jaundice appears due to destruction of red blood cells. The second type appears when liver cells are damaged so severely that the ability to transport bilirubin diglucuronide into the biliary system is reduced, and allow the yellow pigment to flow in the bloodstream. The third type also called obstructive jaundice appears due to obstruction in the biliary tract. (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)
