Introduction

The inflammation of the pharyngeal tonsils is known as tonsillitis. Along with the pharyngeal tonsils, the adenoids, and the lingual tonsils may also get inflamed involving other areas of the back of the throat including, the adenoids and the lingual tonsils. Tonsillitis may be caused due to bacterial or viral infections or other immunological factors. It is widespread in India. Children are more commonly affected. It is mainly transmitted through airborne droplet infection through throat or nasal fluids, etc. The incubation period varies from 2-4 days. In severe and recurring cases of tonsillitis, removal of tonsils (Tonsillectomy advised). Due to advancements in medical sciences, the complications are Rare. Surgical intervention can also be avoided by using Homeopathic medicines. Homeopathy plays an important role in treating cases of tonsillitis and preventing its recurrence with the permanent restoration of health.

Signs and Symptoms

The main symptom is a sore throat. Other Symptoms include swollen and red tonsils, Pain when Swallowing, Fever that may be high, Headaches, tiredness, pain extending to ears or neck, Pus-filled spots on tonsils, tender cervical lymph nodes, and neck stiffness often found in acute tonsillitis. There are also signs of dehydration.

Type of Tonsillitis

 Acute Tonsillitis:

The patient presents with chief complaints of sore Throat, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), odynophagia (painful Swallowing), foul breath, fever, and tender cervical lymph nodes. Swelling may cause mouth breathing, snoring, and sleep apnea. Malaise feeling and lethargicness.

Recurrent Tonsillitis

There are several episodes of acute tonsillitis in a year.

Chronic Tonsillitis

The patient presents with chief complaints of chronic sore throat, Halitosis, tonsillitis, and cervical nodes that are persistently tender.

Complications

The complications are uncommon, but some of the problems that can occur are:

  • Peritonsillar abscess: Occasionally, the abscess formation occurs with severe throat pain, drooling, and fever. The abscesses can develop in the surrounding areas, Such as the roof of the mouth, neck, chest, and lungs.
  • Swelling of the face and neck: This usually occurs in cases of Chronic tonsillitis. It leads to airway obstruction, difficulty breathing, and disturbed sleeping patterns.
  • Otitis media (Middle ear infection): It can also occur in severe cases.
  • Blood poisoning (Septicemia): This may also occur in severe cases if bacteria get into the bloodstream and multiply.
  • Lemierre syndrome (LS) is a rare complication of bacterial pharyngitis/tonsillitis and involves an extension of the infection into the lateral pharyngeal spaces of the neck with subsequent septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein.
  • Glomerulonephritis (Disease of the kidney): It is a very rare complication.

 Homeopathic Approach

Tonsillitis can be cured with homeopathic medicines, which can permanently restore health. Indeed, in severe cases of recurrent/intermittent tonsillitis where tonsillectomy is advised, homeopathic medicines play an important role, and surgical intervention can be avoided. Homeopathy is based upon similia similibus curanter, which means let likes be treated by likes. Tonsil removal is not a cure. If we remove the tonsils, it’s like removing the guards who are safeguarding us, which is not Wise.

Homeopathic medicine views symptoms of illness as normal responses of the body as it attempts to regain health. Homeopathy is based on the idea that “like cures like.” That is, if a substance causes a symptom in a healthy person, giving the person a very small amount of the same substance may cure the illness.

The earlier the treatment starts, the speedier and more complete the cure. Here, the immune power is raised against disease, so recurrence can surely be avoided. In homeopathy, remedies are usually selected based on the character of the disease, and mode of onset, exciting cause, sweat, shivering, thirst, mental restlessness, appetite, etc. A well-selected remedy quickly supports the body mechanism and clears the Complaints at the earliest.

It is a very efficacious remedy in homeopathy, which is a deep-seated and long-acting medicine. The Carbonate of barium is a white amorphous powder, tasteless and odorless, which is stable in the air. It is nearly insoluble in water and is decomposed slightly by boiling water. It is insoluble in alcohol but soluble in dilute HCl or HNO3. Carbonate of barium can be easily obtained by purifying bone ash. Baryta carb has been proven and tested clinically and adopted by Dr. Schusler.

It is made up of Barium and Carbonic acid and its salt is triturated with the sugar of milk and then higher potencies are prepared.

Baryta carb is specially indicated in infancy and old age. Baryta carb brings aid to scrofulous children, especially if they are mentally deficient and physically weak, are dwarfish in appearance, children do not grow and develop, have scrofulous ophthalmia, and have swollen abdomen (bloating), Baryta carb patients take colds easily, and then always have swollen tonsils. Patients are subject to quinsy and are prone to suppurate. The patient looks very idiotic. Baryta carbs are also suited to old people who are fatty and weak, but childish in behavior. Complaints include suppressed sweat from the foot, emotions, crusts, and vermin on the scalp, etc.

Baryta carb in Tonsillitis

Vigorous action of Baryta Carb upon the glandular system commonly, it seems to have a peculiarly strong affinity for the throat, Commonly the tonsils, which become greatly inflamed, swollen, and suppurate due to the least exposure to cold. Therefore, it has become one of our most valuable therapeutic agents in old quinsy subjects.  Solitary, it is often sufficient to abort an attack of quinsy, and with an occasional dose at long intervals with high potency, to overcome the tendency thereto, Baryta carb is as useful to changing the constitutional tendencies to quinsy (peritonsillar abscess), as it is in the acute attack. In acute and chronic tonsillitis, which seems to have come due to a suppressed foot sweat, think of Baryta carb.

Submaxillary glands and tonsils are swollen. Cold intolerance takes cold easily, with stitches and smarting pain. Quinsy. Suppurating tonsils from every cold. Tonsils inflamed, with swollen veins. Smarting pain when swallowing; worse empty swallowing. The feeling of a plug in the pharynx. Can only swallow liquids. Contraction of the esophagus as soon as food enters the esophagus causes gagging and choking. Throat troubles from overuse of voice. Stinging pain in tonsils, pharynx, or larynx.

Relations:

  • Incompatible: Calcarea carb.
  • Complementary to: Conium, Mercurius.
  • After Baryta Carb: Psorinum will eradicate the tendency to quinsy.
  • Baryta carb will act as a preventive against quinsy.

A repeated attack leads to chronicity and other systemic complications. The presenting ailments may vary from systemic symptoms like sore throat, and malaise, with intolerable throat pain, dysphasia, and fever sore throat. Tonsillitis can be cured with homeopathic medicines, which can permanently restore health. Indeed, in severe cases of recurrent/intermittent tonsillitis where tonsillectomy is advised, homeopathic medicines play an important role, and surgical intervention can be avoided. Tonsillitis is best treated with baryta carb, especially in scrofulous children, who are physically dwarfish and do not grow and develop normally. Homeopathic medicines used with a holistic approach are very effective in treating the cases of tonsillitis. A well-selected remedy quickly supports the body mechanism and clears the Complaints at the earliest.
